Student Workshop
There are no immediate plans to offer the Data Science Summer Workshop again, but all of the material presented in the workshop, including the lectures, code, and practice exercises are posted on the Harvard Dataverse here and are freely available.
What is the Data Science Summer Workshop?
This workshop is designed for environmental engineering students at the junior, senior, or graduate level.
The ability to synthesize, analyze, and make decisions using data has become paramount in the water and wastewater treatment (W/WWT) industry. Professors Tzahi Cath (Environmental Engineering, Colorado School of Mines) and Mandy Hering (Statistics, Baylor University) have been collaborating on data science problems in W/WWT for the past 10 years and will share their experience in this one-week workshop. Students should apply if they wish to improve their data analysis and programming skills with the R language and envision using these tools in their future careers in the W/WWT industry. In this workshop, we will:
- Introduce the next generation of environmental engineers to modern data analysis tools available in the free programming language R.
- Provide training in data cleaning, visualization, data analysis, and modeling specific to problems arising in the field of water and wastewater treatment.
- Provide a pre-workshop bootcamp with videos and materials for students to work through independently in advance of the workshop.
- Present new material each morning with small group break-out sessions in the afternoon to practice skills on data collected from a real water or wastewater treatment process.
- Develop student's critical-thinking, presentation, and teamwork skills.
